In an industry that often overthinks and complicates design, the newest hotel from the Singapore-based COMO group is a refreshingly understated addition to Perth’s booming accommodations scene. Which is not to say that any detail has been overlooked; with applauded Western Australian architect Kerry Hill behind the project, there was never any doubt it would be faultless. But Hill has swapped frou-frou for pared-back simplicity that complements the stunning historic buildings the property occupies. Linking three late Victorian buildings that were once the state’s post office, land titles office, and treasury, the hotel offers some of the largest rooms in the country, each individual in layout, with prints of Western Australian flora by local artists Philippa and Alex Nikulinsky softening high-ceilinged heritage spaces. Talented young chef Jed Gerrard uses foraged fare in his creative menu at rooftop restaurant Wildflower, while ground-floor Post is a great place to sample the group’s signature Shambhala dishes. From here, head off to explore the rest of the complex, which includes boutiques, Thai restaurant Long Chim, and a COMO Shambhala yoga room and spa.
