THE DETAILS
Tioman Island

Getting There

The quickest way to get to Tioman is to hop on a Berjaya Air prop plane from either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, which gets you to Tioman in about 40 to 60 minutes, respectively. Ferry crossings from the mainland take at least an hour and a half.

Where to Stay

JapaMala (Kampung Lanting; 60-9/419-7777; japamalaresorts.com; doubles from US$150) has 30 plush, forest-shrouded wooden villas that overlook a private beach. The island’s only other luxury option is the 85-hectare Berjaya Tioman (60-9/419-1000; berjayahotel.com; doubles from US$116), which offers something for everyone: an 18-hole golf course, a full-service spa, and a wide array of land and sea activities for all ages.

What to See

The volunteers at the Juara Turtle Project (juaraturtleproject.com) give twice-daily presentations about efforts to protect Tioman’s diminishing turtle population.
