Manta Underwater Room, Zanzibar
Set on the northern tip of Tanzania’s Pemba Island, the Manta Resort is not, admittedly, limited to just one guest room —there are 16 accommodations arranged behind its white-sand beachfront. But those who book the resort’s new Underwater Room might as well be in a world of their own. Anchored 250 meters offshore in a gap in the coral reef, the semi-submerged suite comprises a rooftop sun deck, an open-plan living area, and, below the water, a bedroom with windows that look straight out into the Indian Ocean—and at whatever fish happen to be swimming past (255-776/ 718-852; doubles from US$1,500).
