The second East opening by Swire Hotels (Miami is next) retains the youthful business- meets-leisure vibe of its Hong Kong sibling, plus a similarly off-center location, this time near the 798 Art District. Sparse minimalism defines the lobby, with super-high ceilings, polished concrete, and grainy wood offsetting hand-size check-in pads. The 369 rooms and suites are similarly uncluttered, with suede walls and blond woods invigorated by garden-themed murals above the beds. In-room iPads are loaded with apps and music, and round tubs perched on marble plinths afford views of the Chinese capital’s skyline. Designed by Neri& Hu, the trendy dining spaces are heavily reliant on wood and brick. Hagaki serves Californian-style Japanese cuisine, while open-plan diner Feast is a hip hangout for weekend brunch. After dark, Xian offers a pub, whisky bar, and cocktail-lounge hybrid with leather armchairs and gray hutong brickwork; a Latin-infused band keeps the place rocking until late.
