Upping the Game

Sir Richard Branson’s second African safari camp, Mahali Mzuri (44-208/600-0430; mahalimzuri.virgin.com; doubles from US$590 per night), has opened in southeastern Kenya’s Motorogi Conservancy just in time to welcome the annual Great Migration, when more than a million wildebeest and half as many gazelles and zebras venture north from Tanzania’s Serengeti to the grasslands of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Much easier to compute will be the number of your fellow guests: Mahali Mzuri—which translates as “beautiful place” in Swahili —accommodates just 24 people at a time, in a dozen plush tents that jut from the bush like terra-cotta-hued spaceships. Between game drives, diversions include champagne picnics, orinka massages, and visits to a nearby Masai village.
