Rajasthan: Tented Luxury in Thar Desert at ‘The Serai’

Bringing tented luxury to the edge of Rajasthan’s Thar Desert, The Serai (91-11/2374-3194; doubles from US$520) is set to open in September (2009) with 21 lavish canvas-topped suites nestled amid khejri trees and scrub. The spacious tents—some with private gardens and plunge pools—feature rosewood and teak campaign-style furniture, while handwoven dhurrie rugs line the cool stone floors. Bespoke excursions include camel treks across the sand dunes and visits to the forts and temples of nearby Jaisalmer. End the day with a fireside feast, or bliss out at the camp’s spa, where native herbs and spices are used to exfoliate sun-kissed skin. –David Tse
